Technology has drastically improved. It's about time your eyesight did too!

(thank you, anne, for letting us use this picture)
American Eye Center (AEC) is the latest company to support our homecoming. And their help comes in a form that can help you and our fundraiser. AEC gave us 2 certificates for a Bilateral LASIK (Laser Assisted Insitu Keratomileusis) procedure. That doesn't mean one certificate for one eye!!! These certificates are available to 2 candidates.
We are selling this procedure at a much lower price. What would regularly cost 70,000 bucks is now 50,000 bucks. If you want a layaway plan, we're open to that, too! Please leave a comment here or email Myra Castillo if you, or anyone you know is truly interested.
Thank you for letting others know about this opportunity of being able to see things more clearly.

One Not So Quiet Saturday Afternoon…
19 June 2010, 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm
~ Serendra, The Fort
…Sri Rivera Roy and Trixie (aka Mohnani), invited everyone to a despedida for their good friend, Becky Boncan. Becky returns to Vienna, where she resides with her husband, end June. The get-together evolved into a meeting to update everyone present about our homecoming.

It was a joyous mini reunion. A lot of us saw each other, for the first time, after 20 over years! There was none stop chattering that Chinky de Leon, our batch homecoming president, had difficulty silencing everyone – she had lots of good news to share. To add to more Scholastican drama to her announcements, she slipped into an all too familiar garb that we all wore for most of our younger years. (This version doesn’t allow for you to put down the straps.)

(Contact Becky Malto Feliciano if you want a shirt, too)
Let me share with you Chinky's announcements. Btw, Thanks, Sri! Thanks, Mohnani! It was great seeing everyone. (At ang lakas ng pull ni Becky!)

Little Laws for Little Ladies:
In 1970, a book was created by Guia S. Castillo, with a typewriter and drawings by young Scholasticans. The book was mimeographed (remember that noisy machine in the office?!), folded and manually bound with a stapler. It was a guidebook that helped young ladies grow up to eventually be young & confident women, mothers, homemakers, career women, business women and professionals.
That same book resurfaced in the hands of Myra Castillo during one of the meetings. It was a grand idea, everyone thought, to make a new version! And the creation of a new version is just what happened.
The Introduction:
“In 1970, Guia S. Castillo wrote and published the “Little Laws for Little People” which became the standard handbook for good manners adopted by students of St. Scholastica’s College, Manila. The book provided instructional and practical everyday courtesies that young students would eventually and constantly face in their lifetime.
In celebration of its Silver Jubilee, St. Scholastica’s College High School Batch 1986 has embarked on a project to provide an updated version of Castillo’s handbook. Entitled “Little Laws for Little Ladies, A Handbook on Manners and Etiquette”, this book is envisioned to provide the new breed of young students with vital and fundamental information on everyday etiquette inside and outside of the home as well as good manners when using technologies that continue to shape our future, such as email and text messaging. At the end of some topics, there are exercises that the student needs to perform to enable better retention of the lesson. This handbook will continue to evolve to respond and prepare future young students on how to face global changes and challenges.”
The author of the book is Jojo Feliciano, Becky Malto Feliciano’s husband…we owe him big time, girls. He did this for the love of Becky and to help us all out! (None of us Scholasticans had the time to do it.) So when and if you meet him, it would be nice to show him your appreciation and gratitude.
Also, the brains behind this book are Elaine Saul Baloloy, Myra Castillo, Becky Feliciano and Tina Puno. They also did all the legwork! Thank you, again to you all!
This is one of our bigger fund raising projects! Present SSC students will be using this book to guide them as students and young women. 5,000 copies have been published. This book is available by 28 June 2010. There’s enough for the students and for all of you that may want to give them away as birthday or Christmas presents. Or even just to support our batch.
This book, ideally, will continue to make money for our batch in the coming years. When we meet again after 50 years, we’ll have money in our kitty
Sex and The City 2:
Headed by section 4-C, this project was a success! There were lots of cosmos, lots of attendees, lots of us Scholasticans, lots of food, lots of support from everyone, and lots of ticket sales. This project did really good.

Big thank you to the women that worked hard in putting this night together. Thank you, Coco Raymundo, for heading this fundraiser and thank you to Myra Castillo for all your super powers. Also, none of this would have gone so smoothly without Ac Legarda’s help. Again. Thank you. Kudos to you, ladies! And thank you, 4-C!

Those are our updates for now. Pardon the blog silence. Things have been quite hectic on my end. But in all that silence, I was able to (over) hear a few things to share in our all new “Blind Item Corner”!
Blind Item Number One: A Birkin Bag, a real one, was spotted squirming on an unglamorous monoblock chair last Saturday. One of our officers dared to pick it up to solicit a reaction. She wanted to know who owns it and if it is a real Birkin bag. From across the room, we heard a simple, reserved and humble, “hoy”, from the owner. The bag owner’s good friend confirmed its authenticity by showing us the raincoat inside the bag and by telling us that she personally reserved it at Hermes for the owner. (The raincoat is for the bag, by the way.)
Blind Item Number Two: Several women have a crush on Becky Boncan’s Portuguese husband. In fact, another fund raising idea was inspired by his presence – 100 bucks for anyone who wanted a picture with him – an idea conceived by the smart and pretty woman, running the most successful commercial center in this country!
Becky donated 100 bucks more to our fund!

Blind Item Number Three to Twenty Five: Please contact the other Scholasticans who attended the get together to hear more stories. Or! Next time please just attend future get-togethers. You can’t imagine how lovely these gatherings are. We would really love to see you all.

Reunion With My Playmates
By Dolly de Leon Gutierrez
Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at 12:03am
(originally posted on Facebook)

Thanks to Peachy Tupaz for this photo of the actual concert.
In my status it says "I died and went to heaven last night in Araneta. TFF YOU ARE THE BEST!!!!"
And I did. And they are. Tears for Fears' music is full of the passion (this once teenager) felt and still feels despite the changing times (and anatomy).
There was one moment during the concert when I thought to myself. "My God, they are actually right in front of me, singing the songs I would dance and cry to during my tumultuous journey as a pubescent in the 80's." Well maybe not in those words. More of, "MY GOD!!!!! THEY'RE SINGING TO ME LIVE!!!!!"
Roland Orzabal sounded exactly like he does in my ipod and possibly even better. Yes, my friends, better. What a powerful and soulful voice! I noticed he used three different voices in just one song - mind you, not octaves - VOICES. He's not human.
Curt Smith is hotter than ever. Though I never really did like him that much. Roland was always my favorite. But Seeing Curt in that t-shirt with his salt and pepper hair made me melt right there on the Upper A section of the coliseum. And yes, we are on a first name basis. We were playmates, remember? What a duo. Dynamic. The dynamic duo!
Some readers may laugh at what I'm about to say but I am not ashamed to admit that being in that concert is one of the best and happiest moments of my life. I am no groupie but I can now imagine how a real groupie feels. The hair on my arms and cheeks stood on end when they started playing the intro of their second song of the night "Everybody Wants to To Rule the World." Oh my gosh, I thought to myself. This is real. This is HAPPENING. Pinch me.
I knew about the concert since December of '09. I knew I had to watch the band that was responsible for expressing all the inner turmoil of Dolly when she was a teenager. Not only that but also the very hopeful and sanguine me, thanks to "Sowing the Seeds of Love" which is my all-time TFF favorite. (Yes, I was pulling my hair and screaming my lungs out when they played that song. A tear fell.)
As the days were drawing near I wanted to fast forward my life to May 2. So I did what the usual anticipating fan does in times of impatience. I did some research on the net about a week before the concert. I found out that they had launched a new album. Oh no. I knew right then they would play a handful of new songs. The new album's name is "Everybody Loves a Happy Ending." I considered downloading the stuff and listen to them so I can go to the concert "prepared" but decided against it. Only because I was too lazy to do it. And also because I know what happens to erstwhile band mates who reunite. Their evolved creative compulsions don't sync with my own evolved passion for music anymore. But I digress. Back to the concert.
The inevitable happened. They played five (I think) new songs. In all honesty I was pleasantly surprised. I liked three of them: "Call Me Mellow", "Closest Thing To Heaven" which is a quasi Beatles/Blow Monkeys type of song and one more which title escapes me. It's funky, quirky and Modest Mousish. (If anyone knows please let me know because that's the one i like the most.) Now, this is all fine. I mean really, the purpose of most concerts, aside from making extra income, is to promote an album. Unlike most of the audience who would sit when they couldn't recognize a song, I remained standing and dancing the entire time in support of my playmates. After all it is our reunion and I was determined to have fun even if a few songs were alien to me. How often do I get to see blasts from my past and actually HAVE fun?
But - and this is a big BUT - what happened to...
Mothers Talk
Change
Laid So Low
The Way You Are
I Believe
The Working Hour
and my 2nd favorite TFF song Suffer the Children??????? Duuuuuuuh?????
I felt betrayed. It was like a shove in the sandbox all over again (although I never played in a sand box). Thank you for making me weepy in "Woman In Chains". It was painful and sweet and perfect but really? Seven missing songs? I mean guys, come on. Guys. Guys! Roland and Curt, I really hope by some twist of fate you read this note because I heard a rumor that you're coming back and your Philippine contacts better tell you that you CANNOT perform in the Philippines and not sing Mothers Talk. Hello? How old are the organizers of the concert anyway, 24?
Otherwise the concert was brilliant. Simple, no pyro techniques, no dancers with their perfect bodies contorting overhead by a rope, no added visual imagery, no drama. Just pure, unadulterated quality performance. Beautiful music. Beautiful Rolly and Curt. Great Oleta Adams replacement.
I still get chills when I remember how Roland strummed his red guitar in "Pale Shelter" but that doesn't mean I'm over the fact that they didn't give me those seven songs.
You know what? Despite the seven sins, I will forever be grateful to them for taking me out of that void of silence where we cry without a sound and for reminding me that anything is possible.
TFF, if you come back I'll be there to collect.
PS. And please do the Mad World dance next time, Roland. We all imitated that dance in high school but no one could do it like YOU.

Tuesday Night with The Girls
We've got 282 days to go before our homecoming. And that's why we are working so hard to get things done. The days are going by too fast.
Last Tuesday's meeting seemed to be full of good news...
...We've got a little more money coming in but we still don't have enough...so help! Please? :-) Feel free to write your class representatives if you have referrals / sponsors in mind. There is a letter that's been well crafted and it's readily available for you. All you need is to let us know.
...Coming soon is Sex and the City. Tears for Fears is happening even sooner! (See you all on May 2!!!) There's also a book project in the works. But this deserves a separate post. Little Women, I just learned, will be performed by the original traveling cast and just like Sleeping Beauty, is a musical. The core group also got a peek at the revised St. Scho Swatch Watch! It's looking really good! (We're aware that a lot of you are interested in purchasing one. We promise to share the details of how to purchase one once everything is made final.)
...We also have more themes that have come in. A total of...drum roll please...3! These ones are worth sharing with you all!
"25 years WE LOVE" or "25 Years and Loving It" or "25 Years and Loving Life"
I thought of these themes because of its very positive vibe. It's like 25 years of loving people, life, health, relationships, sports, God, our jobs, families, friends, Our past, present, and future, etc. It's also very general and applies to all, working or stay at home moms. It connotes enjoyment of life and making the best out of it. It implies success too. It implies a continuous process of success and fun in life. It's all about having fun too in everday life, despite its ups and downs. It talks about the past we loved and enjoyed and the future we are about to love...
Thank you, Mariel, for sharing this with us.
We know there are a lot more theme suggestions floating around. We need them all in soon. So please write in via email or leave a comment.
This is all we have for now. Plus a few pics below taken during our last meeting.

The Women from When We Were Little Girls
There are women from our childhood that will always be alive in our hearts - there's Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy from Louisa May Alcott's, Little Women. And there's also Sleeping Beauty. Does anybody know her name?
Get to know more about these women all over again when our batch sponsors matinee shows for these classics with Repertory Philippines.

A Few Words (and Money) From Our Sponsors
This blog has been quiet for some time, but it doesn't mean that nothing has been happening. Behind the scenes, the core group has been working doubly hard to make our homecoming a success.

First off, Sex and the City this June. It'll be a big girls night out with all of you around. So please come. We'll share more details once everything is finalized.
Next, we have sponsors! Lots of them. And with sponsors comes money! Thank you to all of you that have been working so hard to get these sponsors. Here's what we have so far...drum roll please...130,000 bucks! Thank you so much to:
~ Piandre
~ Rolex
~ Greenbelt
~ Collezione
~ Trinoma
~ Girbaud / Body Shop
And thank you so much to Acy Legarda for all the help she has extended to our batch.
Cross your fingers for there are other sponsors we are waiting to hear from. We will also let you know how those partnerships pan out.
We've also made a good amount from the sale of 104 Tears for Fears tickets. The tickets that were shared with us by La Salle are sold out! So thank you, too, La Salle, for those sought after tickets.
Thank you, too, for the pledges! Some Scholasticans living abroad have come home for short visits and made time to add to our homecoming fund.
We've had a slow but great start. There's more work to be done and we still need everyone to help support us in anyway they can. Even just suggesting a theme (hint! hint!) for the homecoming is a great way to get involved :-)
We'll keep you all posted and please share this post with all the batch 86 Scholasticans out there.
Let's give those that have been working so hard a big round of applause please. Applause! Applause! Thank you, ladies!

Meet The Batch Nag
Hello, all! I am the Anonymous Batch Nag who has been tasked by the blog administrator with the job of nagging all batch '86 Scholasticans for anything and everything that needs your attention because the organizers didn't get your attention and cooperation the first time round.
I willingly took on this responsibility with only one condition...that I shall never ever, and I mean, not ever, be identified. I don't want you to hate me. I am rather lovable once you discover who I am! Heheh!
My first task is to bug, hound, tap your shoulder and even enter your dreams and nag you to submit a theme for our homecoming.
This is what we have so far...
• Kulasa Fiesta
• Kulasa Power '86 (EDSA 1986 was "people power", remember?)
• Through The Looking Glass (The person who submitted this loved the dresses in the movie. The dresses reminded her of the ball we didn't have.)
• Denim Ball (Also for the reason that we didn't celebrate for ourselves, a Graduation Ball.)
• Blue and White Scholar Workers (I know. All of you may be saying "huh?!" Well, this is my suggestion. So please suggest some themes so this doesn't get chosen.)
• 25 Years. Blue Without You.
• 25 Years and Still A Coolasa.
• Silver Jubilee Ball (Hmmm...this seems to be a common suggestion. Maybe we should celebrate our homecoming this way! Pero baka mahalia jackson ang costumes!)
So there. That's all we have for now. 8. Eight themes to choose from, from only a handful of kulasas. Come on, batch '86, we can come up with more than this. There are 7 sections with at least 40 women in each class. All I ask is 2 suggestions from each of you...puhleaze?
Write in before July! O, yan ha, that's a lot of time!
The winner gets to know my true identity. (: Maybe.

From Winnie Santos Sacro:
We have an additional 1,405.25 bucks, courtesy of the junk collector and passersby that bought 'tingi-tingi'. We were given an official receipt in case daw Winnie gets questioned ;-)
From Bea Serrano Arcenas:
Elaine gave free dental consultation to buyers. And to make the buyer's smiles even bigger, she gave away tagalog komiks, 'Ang Buhay ni San Benito". Salamat, Doktora :-)
From Lala Araneta Cordero:
Lala pledged $40 (Canadian Dollars) so that Elaine's bravery is not all in vain and also so that Bea will have happy thought bubbles.

VHS Rewinder Stolen at Garage Sale!
(Taken from Bea Arcenas’ garage sale minutes)
Sale Opening:
As early as 7:01 AM last Saturday, thirty five construction workers, helpers, drivers, body guards and bystanders filled the Sacro garage. The morning was busy for our sellers! While all this was happening, Bea heard an obnoxious lady haggling with Elaine Saul Baloloy over curtains. As all this ‘tawaran’ was going on, a man nabbed a VHS rewinder worth forty pesos (alam niya kaya na wala ng gamit ‘yon?) Elaine Saul Baloloy bravely ran after the man!!! And for that, Elaine has been crowned Queen of Garage Sales! Sadly, we never got to earn from that VHS rewinder. That’s 40 bucks down the drain. (Bea’s thought bubble: “Forty pesos?!!!” …as pronounced in the running Dove commercial.)
Garage Sale Donations:
Thank you, all!!! Acy Legarda donated, I hear, a pile high of glamorous gowns. Tina Puno, tons of purple shoes and a balikbayan box full of cassette tapes... sold at 1 buck each. An unbelievable amount of barongs were donated by Coco Raymundo.
Thank you, too, to everyone else that donated old things for the garage sale.
Highlights of the Afternoon:
• Elaine Saul Baloloy is Crowned Queen (of Garage Sales). That now makes her "Reyna Elaine na"
• Winnie Sacro whipped up a fabulous lunch for everyone. Thank you!
• She also served everyone brownies that she, too, baked!
• Priceless stories from Winnie’s mother-in-law which everyone enjoyed.
• The electric fan’s draft must not hit Chinky de Leon! Not even on a hot day.
• Mayet Amora Yap brings asado rolls.
• VHS rewinder stolen.
Total Sale:
PhP 21,000 bucks! Congratulations!!! We would have had an extra 40 bucks though if that man had not stolen the rewinder.
•••
A Note from our host, Winnie Santos (not the one from Apat na Sikat):
Just to add to Bea's minutes...thanks again to all of you for your contributions; whether it's time spent selling under the hot sun or thru donated items or even just a note to wish us luck. Our concerted effort earned us 21K, kudos to all !! (May pang bayad na tayo ng bulaklak para sa Homecoming mass heheh) I will let you know what the junk collector or Eloy's pays for the remaining stuff here in Magallanes. They should be coming some time this week. It was a pleasure hosting those who got to stay for lunch..so until the next garage sale, keep on clearing your cabinets!!

Thank you, ladies, for manning the yard sale! :-)

There's no place like home...There's no place like home…
Remember when we were all arranged alphabetically? This is what I recall…..
One day in the middle of Sophomore year (sometime August or Sept. ) someone suddenly sat between me (Bea Serrano) and Vanessa Santos.
As far as I was concerned, her name was a dead giveaway. I was so sure, Winnie Santos was a member of the group called "APAT na SIKAT" and that she is the sister of Ate Vi.
We had just finished a class with Ms. Galan (P.E.) and I was getting annoyed with the "new student" as she spoke in a somewhat psuedo-british accent.
She said, "B (as in Bee) Listen to this"..... all in one swift motion sticking the left ear phone into my right ear while sticking the right ear phone into her left ear..... it was the first time I heard the words....
"Don't you worry 'bout the situation ..ah a... the message from the telephone.... we're only fighting for the State of the Nation!...."
Back in the prehistoric days of the ipod... being the nerd I was, I thought it must be some kind of back-masking a Michael Jackson song with hidden evil hypnotic messages!!! The British Pop group Industry was never heard of in Manila at that time.
The Nerve! She brought contraband (a really high tech walkman) to school and she was trying to drag me as her accomplice!!!! Plus, I suffered the rest of the day with LSS (as in Last Song Syndrome) without knowing what to call it then.
Many pounds, years later and after thousands of pesos on therapy.... I finally accepted the truth that those three years sitting next to Winnie did not go to waste and I must confess that she is "the Coolest Seatmate Ever!"
To Winnie, I'm so sorry I never let you copy from my test papers!
Hugs!
Bea

Words That Inspire
A Silver Hangover
by Ginge Pagulayan Salud, SSC Batch'85
Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at 8:47am
Now, I can see what 25 years can do. At high school graduation, I was just raring to move on - from the confines of both my physical and metaphysical Benedictine upbringing; from high school to college; from old friends to new ones. I chide myself today for how easy it had been for me to let go and forget.
I jumped at the invite of my old high school friends to be part of silver homecoming plans. Immediately, I was reeled in as I happily immersed myself in the work. More than that, I had a foretaste of happy little reunions, rejoicing at the surfacing of old friends I thought I had forgotten.
I used to think the old days were all behind me - where I had charged everything to the folly of my youth, and committed them all to memory. Today, I am realizing how sweet it is to go back, to go home. Homecoming day was a mere backdrop to a grand reunion of old friends. At this age of introspection, I have picked out my life's greatest blessings. Apart from the gift of family, I value the gift of friendship. Luckily, I have crossed paths with many who have managed to weave a colorful tapestry of memories into my life.
It's been a week after the grand homecoming - where we 40 something old ladies are all rocked out and yet giddy still over successfully converging at our alma mater. We love talking and laughing about yesterday, as if we were all donned in our old blue jumpers yet again. Of late, we keep finding reasons to get together - to celebrate the past and toast to the many happy memories we have yet to make together.
At this age I thought I made all the friends I need to make. I am happily finding that I am wrong! And so I thank you, dear classmates and friends - for the shining years that will always ring with much love and laughter. Cheers to another 25 more!

'86 at '85's Homecoming
Just sharing some pics of some of us batch '86 kulasas at SSC batch '85's homecoming. Remember Miss Buñag and Miss Balgo :-) All of you will get to see them, too, next year at our homecoming!

This was the day batch '85 passed the baton (in the form of a ballot...it's election year) to Chinky de Leon, SSC batch '86's representative.

Let us all do what we can and help Chinky make our homecoming a success! :-)
•••
The picture below is at Alexandre Restaurant, the meeting Chinky de Leon got elected president and where everyone shared ideas for fund raising projects.

(Your ideas are still welcome. Please leave a comment or email your class representatives for your brilliant ideas :-)

The Suggestion Box
Hello, all! We hope everyone's having a wonderful weekend...taking a break from the busy week...waking up late...relaxing. While you're doing all that, we ask you to do something for the batch. It doesn't require much effort on your part.
We need a theme for our homecoming :-) Please suggest one (or ten) homecoming themes before we present the choices to St. Scho this July.
High school batch '85 just had a very successful homecoming and their theme was Baranggay St. Scholastica.
Somebody from batch 86 suggested "St. Scholastica, You've Got Talent!" See?! That only means all of you can come up with more suggestions!
Remember, the more, the many-er!

Time Is Ticking for the St. Scho Swatch

(This design is work in progress. We'll show you the final design soon!!!)
Gift Gate Phils., Inc. President Virginia Ramos recently announced the ongoing production for a limited edition St. Scholastica’s College commemorative Swatch watch. This project is being undertaken as a joint venture with Gift Gate by St. Scholastica’s College (SSC), Manila High School Batch 1986 as part of their 25th Silver Jubilee anniversary celebration. The watch strap design features symbols of the Scholastican ideals of “Ora et Labora” and “Pax” in the school’s colors of blue and white.

Under the agreement signed between Ms. Ramos and SSC Batch 86 representatives Aurora Legarda and Myra Castillo, only 500 numbered pieces of this commemorative watch will be produced which will be exclusively sold through authorized Swatch outlets.
The watches will be available by September 2010.
Tick tock! Tick tock!
